Jean and Lois corresponded frequently in the first years of their relationship when one or the other was away from New York working or traveling. (They met through her responding to Shep’s on-air request to listeners during his overnight broadcasts in early 1956, for an original joke. She called in: What kind of cereal do ghosts eat? Answer= Ghost Toasties.) Eventually he asked her out to dinner and they began dating.
She continued calling in to him on his show, and soon became known as “The Listener.” On at least one occasion (right after he got back on the air after his firing in August, 1956), one can hear her voice on the telephone for a moment.
From the correspondence pieces for sale on ebay, it seems that she tended to write long letters and he tended to write crammed-full postcards. Each expressed love for the other. All four pieces below are from 1957.
(Note that I own some of these pieces of correspondence I’ve been posting,
and much of what I post was captured from the ebay listings others bought.)
